Consonant Letters In Nepali Barnamala

There are 33 consonant letters representing a single consonantal sound and an inherent vowel, generally the sound

क – ka, ख – kʰa, ग – ga , घ – gʰa , ङ – ŋa, च – cha, छ – chʰa, ज – ja, झ – jʰa, ञ – ɲa, ट -ʈa , ठ – ʈʰa , ड – ɖa , ढ – ɖʰa , ण – ɳa , त – t̪a, थ – t̪ʰa, द – d̪a, ध – d̪ʰa, न – na, प – pa, फ – pʰa , ब – ba , भ -bʰa, म – ma, य -ya, र – ra, ल – la , व – wa, श – sa , ष – sa , स – sa , ह – ha.

Vowel Letters In Nepali Barnamala

There are 11 independent vowel letters

अ – a , आ – ä, इ – i , ई – i , उ – u , ऊ – u , ऋ – ri , ए – e , ऐ – ai , ओ – o , औ – au .

Vowel Signs (Matras – मात्रा )
10 vowel signs are used for writing noninherent vowels: ा /ä/, ि /i/, ी /i/, ु /u/, ू /u/, ृ /्ri/, े /e/, ै /ai/, ो /o/, ौ /au/. They do not stand alone; the exist in combination with a consonant letter as mentioned above , e.g., क – ka + ो -o = को – ko .

A letter – ऋ (ri) is also used in Nepali language but, it is not considered as a Nepali alphabet because it is only used in the words that are borrowed from the Sanskrit language For example – Rishi, Ritu etc.

There are other signs which are also used in Nepali Barnamala.

Hal ( ् ), Consonant Conjuncts Eg, e.g.,क – ka + ् hal + य -ya = क्य -kya

Chandrabindu ( ँ ) and Shirbindu ( ं ) eg. अंक – anka

Punctuation (full stop in English, called “purna biram” in Nepali – |)

( | ) this sigh is used to terminate sentences in Nepali Barnamala.

The number ranges from zero to infinite, here are the first 11 Nepali Numbers.

o – jiro – जिरो – 0 – Zero
१ – ek – एक – 1 – One
२ – dui – दुइ – 2 – Two
३ – teen – तीन – 3 – Three
४ – char – चार – 4 – Four
५ – panch – पाँच – 5 – Five
६ – chha – छ – 6 – Six
७ – saat – सात – 7 – Seven
८ – aath -आठ – 8 – Eight
९ – nau – नौ – 9 – Nine
१o – dus – दश – 10 – Ten
